    Tie Rods

    Hello Tom

Funny you should post this question. I am going thru this exact job right NOW on my 1970 911 T Targa. Yes, the turbo tie-rods screw right into your steering rack. You should receive new boots with your Turbo Tie-rod kit. But like all jobs early 911 you have to decide how original you want it to be. The turbo tie-rod kit I purchased came with a standard pinch-type lock not to secure the tie-rod into the strut. The original nut was a castle nut with a split pin. I attached a picture that shows at top the original tie rod from 1970, in the middle is the tie-rod end with the modern lock nut, at the bottom is a new tie-rod end that uses a castle nut ( P/N 930 347 322 00 ). Of course I will end up painting the bottom tie-rod end black before installation. When I worked on these cars 30 years ago it used to be easier....

Don't forget a bump kit if you change the ride height.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the "improvement" on the upgrade to turbo tie rod ends.? I have a stock 71 T that I may put these on, but curious to what kind of improvement I should see. Thx again

Many threads on this, the big gain is not so much the tie rod end as shown above but the end at the steering rack, you get a more solid spherical joint there and get rid of a rubber block like mount that has more play even as new. you can look at that part without having to remove the wheel. A great improvement on all 901 / 902 cars including SWB, just have to be aware of the length threaded into the adjuster sleeve, or use the special longer version from Elephant.

Turbo Tie Rod from Elephant Racing

Here is a picture of the turbo tie rod, the improvement is at the steering rack as Jerry L states. A mono-ball instead of rubber. I have never done a back-to-back comparison to see if just changing one thing will make a noticable improvement - it makes handling sense, but you lose originality.

Any advantage to the Elephant set up vs. the "run of the mill turbo set up's" available.?

There are several ways to deal with changing from the stock set up and eliminating the Silentbloc bush from the end of the rack.

The easiest way is just to buy the Lemfoerder Turbo Tie Rod Kit and use the Turbo Track Rod End (TRE) and the washers that are the lock stops.

I would tend to buy the Gaiters from Porsche as some of the aftermarket parts fall to pieces after 2-3 months.

If you have a SWB car then either the TRE or the Tie Rod needs to be longer to avoid the thread problem described above.

There is a compatible TRE available from a Rover 200/Honda Civic for around $10 each that solves the problem and it long enough to engage 1.5 x the Tie Rod thread diameter.

The alternative is to use a longer Tie Rod and a standard Turbo TRE. There is a Hyundai part that fits in terms of thread sizes and is the correct length but it will also use a different gaiter.

We use a gaiter from a Ford Transit with this arrangement. The Tie Rod is $20 and gaiter is $7.50.

Chris, nice options to look at, thanks for the information.

    Regards

Edit: as a reference pics of a swb stock tie rod set up added
