Searching for engine #907495 and gearbox 902/1 #229687
Heading downtown . . .
1) Why I bring a camera . . . digital memory . . . of some really free parking
2) + 3) 912, maybe? Color reminds me of Schiefer's lavender S. A little
4) + 5) 356C. Plate looks like a re-purposed commercial one? --- definitely not a passenger tag
And being there a bit earlier in the evening definitely made for a quieter time. Last year when we went, Russo & Steele were staging the cars going into the auction on this street. Fun times, then, I suppose --- but today I was beat . . . and all I really wanted to do was find us a cozy Someplace, have a good meal, and give Zovig a good schmoozing
Loooong day
Found this place to have our supper --- The Crown and Anchor . . . corner of Calle Principal + Franklin. Rolly knows it
English-themed restaurant/bar/pub. Small + tidy +kiiiiinda claustrophobic. And I seem to recall all manner of odd-ball stuff tacked/nailed to the walls . . . rummage sale as home decor
Place. Was. Packed
But a Nice Hostess with a real-deal English accent managed to give us a cozy corner booth, so --- down we sat. TVs blasting, customers crowding, glasses clanking --- holy cow, what a maelstrom of humanity, that was --- but? . . .
. . . we had a corner booth = Great View --- I was sitting shotgun . . . and boy, did it feel good to sit down on some nice/comfy padded leather (?) seating, have a hot meal, a cool drink . . . and watch everybody else exhaust themselves
Good food, decent service --- did I mention we had a corner booth? . . . and I don't recall the cost, but --- I tipped 'em like I was a Lotto winner, so . . .
. . . we can come back
1) Zovig's
2) Mine
3) thru 5) Out on the Street. The Possessor of this here creation was alleged to be in The Crown and Anchor. Never saw this Individual. (I was looking for someone with a cape, in tights.) Did hear 'em leave, though
Had another great night's sleep, quick snack for breakfast, then left ~9:00 AM Sunday. As we were leaving, we were met by our Host, Zander. Younger Guy than I was expecting, and real approachable/friendly, too. We thanked him (again) for our wonderful accommodations, apologized for any racket that we're about to cause --- which was where he politely stopped me . . .
Turns out --- he's more-than-a-little-bit of a Motorhead himself. I'd seen his TT Coupe, when we first arrived. But what I didn't expect/notice/pick-up on was his AWD Previa. Until Zander told me a little bit more about it, I had NO IDEA that Toyota even made such a contraption. Then we spent a few minutes talking about AUDI's quattro system --- both of us Huge Fans, turns out . . . also how to maintain such a system. Zander's TT had >100k mi --- my kinda miles . . . and he'd mentioned a certain filter change critical to long-term reliability. Uuuuuuuh --- I think that he and will be talking more . . . about quattros
Anyway, we said our good-byes, then rumbled/barked/howled our way down the hill, got back on The One, took a few parting snaps, tanked-up in town, then . . . . headed home
Got all caught talking w/ a Boxster Owner at the Chevron station, + forgot to frickin' get a receipt/note the fuel we used ------- ay, carumba! . . .
1) + 2) Nasty Car steadfastly refuses to get dirty. Nothing sticks. Even fresh/locally-brewed/full-strength urea . . . washed right off
3) Previa AWD . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Previa
4) Leaving Carmel
5) Handsome Little Rascal --- I think. And a quattro, too. And I've been thinking about gettin' Another Something Fun. Hmm

Drives like this --- gassing-up + taking-off for a week-end, driving around on another city's streets, dealing w/ traffic, hills, parking lots . . . really bring out the joy of owning/using the Nasty Car. All our stuff fits, everything works, puttering around isn't an issue --- 1059 always behaves herself, with no special allowances required . . . car's totally usable. And I love looking over and seeing Zovig beside me, comfortably seated, chatting --- w/ me or in her phone. And if we're looking for something/-place, and if I can't find it asking around . . . then she can usually find it (faster) using her phone. Great little trip. Fun
Point = . . . 1059 was pretty-much invisible. And all the stuff about 'numbers' + 'values' + correct this + wrong that + wear/tear/bird-poop/etc? . . .
. . . same-same
I still remember my first drive in this car --- how convoluted it seemed, just getting 1st gear. And then later, taking the car cross-country. I wasn't exactly terrified, maybe . . . but apprehensive? --- definitely
And so now? --- after all the miles + all the Drives, since? . . .
. . . 1059 just gets better. Smoother. More comfortable, more reliable, more re-assuring . . .
. . . . = faster
This car is so much fun to just use
I'm not sure why, exactly --- but I've been a bit shy about winding the Nasty Car up. Afraid of maybe breaking something. Or hurting something, somehow. And it's not so much the money it could cost to fix things, as, well . . . I don't know . . .
. . . maybe it's because --- she's an 'old' car
Um. We're getting over it
On the way back, we ran w/ a stick of cars, coming out of Salinas, heading South. I prefer to run in a 'pack' when I'm on a highway --- helps w/ my fuel economy, but also cuts down my odds of my being picked-up/-out for speeding . . . and so, when I ran across a group o' cars moving at a decent-enough pace . . . we joined-in. We were all moving along well-enough, but, for some reason, this one character in our group could/would NOT run at a steady pace. 85 mph one minute, 65 the next --- + for no apparent reason, too. The first few times he changed speed like that, I was thinking maybe he had seen one of the CHP's spotter planes that loiter along the highway --- and was just being prudent . We were on The One-Oh-One and this particular stretch is famous for its infestation of law-enforcement . . . and so when someone backs-off all-of-a-sudden --- like this guy did + several times . . . it makes for a tense-enough passage, anyway. But after the 3rd or 4th time of this nonsense --- w/o anything to justify it . . . I just ignored him, tried to drive on
Problem was what I would call the Slinky Effect. When one car slowed, we all tended to slow. Same when someone sped up. Fast-slow-fast-slow = not steady. Extra work. Kinda irritating, too
By the time we got to SLO . . . I'd had enough. And after a week-end of calmly cruising around Monterey --- and 5-plus years of all-kinds-o'-driving, since . . . it sure felt good to just let 1059 run
1) I can get used to this
2) This, too. Wild Donkey, SLO = http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-wild-don...an-luis-obispo

3) . . . mine
4) Road Art --- actually in motion. Maserati Indy? . . . ~Santa Maria
5) Lancia Fulvia . . . ~Santa Barbara

1) Never heard back from Derek Bell --- http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...ty-nine/page72
Guess I'm not all-that surprised. A Very Busy Guy, I'm sure
And what Famous Guy would be interested in talking about some other Famous Guys' story? . . . 'specially if those other Famous Guys were already long gone?
Then, again . . . maybe it's me
Hhhh
2) No determination yet of the identity of the individual that PO Mark Allbaugh (PO #7)'s Boy Alex saw/met at that Car Wash in South Carolina ---

Short. Fit. Bald. Accent. Drove a Big Bentley. Said to've identified himself as a friend of Mr Siffert
3) Random pic --- a selfie/cell-fie taken by Mark (PO #7) . . .
from left-to-right: Mark, Lou Scalzo (PO #6), and none-other-than John Forbes --- PPI Guy + 1059's original Mechanic

Small world
Picked this up, a few weeks back . . . $86 w/ shipping
Not sure of the exact vintage. I liked it because it had the neat/old key clasp. And I can still see the 'dent' made by the Porsche keys that this used to hold
New key blanks are still available, too --- @Stoddard's . . .
1) http://www.stoddard.com/914-531-903-11.html . . . $21.57
2) http://www.stoddard.com/914-531-903-10.html . . . $26.41
Dry, dry, dry. Stiff, too --- feels almost like cardboard . . . + fragile. I'll try to soften it up, at some point . . . saddle soap + low heat + conditioner = $20.00 (?)
Time to retire the one from G. Durst, Davos --- see post #255 . . . priceless
Great posts Rick! Any info on that Fulvia? I will be on the hunt for one this spring.

Hey, Shaun! . . .
Funny. Never been all-that interested in Italian cars --- Ferraris, Maseratis, even Alfas . . .
. . . but Lancias? --- yes. Very clever cars --- still accessible. Also different. And beautiful . . .
. . . but no --- no other details on this one, sorry
And after a week-end full of car shows + driving . . . another car conversation/garage tour would've prolly done it --- for Zovig
