There were some ways* you could always tell if the car was originally delivered with the soft window so verification should be certain.
    H[/QUOTE]

Few ways* I can think of is :
    1. Does any of the SWT parts remain like tonneau cover or tensioners remain?
    2. Do underside Targa bar still have visible cutouts left on its underside?
    3. Do any of the interior targa bar stripped off interior body parts bear any correct clamp markings for tensioner handles?
    4. Does past records/receipts that show work having the SWT conversion (if still exist)?
    5. Does the conversion will include bodywork that covers up tonneau tenex clips holes?
    6. Does interior rear seat areas bear markings of being bungled with conversion, including tenex snaps for rear delete/seat areas?
    7. Does it show if some cars opted for adding additional rear seats.
    8. Does rear window heater wire show a fresh/non factory connection? All SWTS might have wire in place, its just having its electrical, taped off.
    9. Do the openings for 10mm bolts holding the tensioner handle so correct wear?

    Not a bad idea.

One of those is option 9356, W.HECKSC for ROW or S-R WIND for the US market. Note this code is not a US market only code as it is used across cars for all markets.

Another option code, 9316, PERSENNG, which I believe is the tonneau cover for the now exposed rear window area of an unzipped/removed soft window, shows up sporadically throughout the documentation. So it wasn't an automatic that every SWT had the tonneau cover noted. This doesn't necessarily mean the car didn't come with one, it just doesn't show up on the kardex. It has also been said that 9316 may have been an early option code for the SWT itself, but I am not so sure on this interpretation being correct.

Also worth noting is that around ~119310180, the records clearly begin to delineate SWT vs HWT (9354/9355). So something happened at the factory that started the specific call out of which rear window was to be in each car . . .

    Interesting stuff, you Guys . . .

    Another 3-digit option code is M 437 --- see post #16 . . .

The M-codes did not get introduced until 1970. before that they were 4 numbers.

There are absolutely ways to tell if the car was a soft window originally or not but the rear window pretty much needs to be unhooked from the car. There are 3 mounts at the back of the parcel tray to hold the rear bows, 2 distinct holes on the targa bar to mount the lower bow and another detail that I am not saying so in the future forgers do not try to make a fake SWT . . .
