Original door strikers - how were they finished

I have been restoring my door strikers on 31166 so I can fit the doors and get the rear quarters alighned properly.

They were very rusty and had no finish left on them, (if they ever had.)
The outside had red paint but I suspect that was from a later respray. I didnt discover any plating even under the paint.
At the moment I sprayed then silver, to protect them. Does any one know how they were originally finished ?
