Thread: Engine case studs

    Engine case studs

What studs would you normally replace on a stock rebuild of a 2ltr on the engine cases.
Or do you normally chase the treads & clean them, if the torque up fine leave them?
Quite expensive for a full set of studs. Or does someone out there sell a set of case studs? Thanks in advance

Being an aluminum case, you should not have to replace any. Just clean threads. Mag case, different story. Those studs pull easily.

Rick is right but if you can't help yourself don't run a tap down there, you'll just remove material. You can instead use a thin wheel to cut a slot in an M8 bolt then screw that in, any gunk will collect in the slot. Fill the blind holes with solvent and blow them out with compressed air, wear eye and ear protection.

Yes, no die`but they make what is called a thread chaser, that will clean grim out of the threads without cutting any metal. Or a small wire brush with some brake kleen or similar.

when installing new steel head studs into an aluminum case
would it be best to put the studs on dry ice before installing?
i had my studs removed by EDM and the threads are clean, but the shop that removed them did not want to run a 10mmx 1.5 tap because it was thought that the case would have to be heated to 300 degrees for them to be proper.

Appreciate the input. I have a set of snap on tread chasers will use those
When put new head studs in do you put them in dry or use some loctite or similar

Bob, once a clean hole, I have never had a problem screwing them right in. if not by hand then a stud installer, you should not have to put much effort into it.
Sam, red locktite for sure, you don’t have to go crazy, just several drops to cover the threads.
