Benz and BMW (gasoline) wagons are under appreciated. (just don't buy an early 4Matic) Our 2000 has 192,000 miles. I met a guy last week with a very nice older 528i wagon with 170,000 miles. The car could have easily passed for half the miles. Great design that still does not look "dated".

. . . I know-I know . . . Targas are a --- er-uuuum . . . acquired taste
Leaks. Squeaks. Whistles. Bendy-boingy body . . .
. . . but the 993?
Different
Not a lift-off roof panel, anymore . . . but a whole sliding roof panel . . .
. . . a roof panel made o' glass
!
I remember reading how the whole Targa contraption was built separately from the car (Karmann or Valmet or ?)--- then dropped onto it, at final assembly. Sounds like a total cluster-f*ck, I know --- but from talking with more-than-a-few owners? . . .
. . . seems this whole set-up actually works
Reliable. No noises. No leaks. No problems. And everybody that I talked to who has one . . . loves the thing
I'm pretty turned-off by the whole 'Targa' thing, in general --- and the 993 version came with some ugly-a$$ wheels . . . but, as time 's gone by, and after talking to more-than-a-few owners . . . the car comes across as something special
And, I mean --- check-out the view!
Not exactly a rare car . . .
...1996: 2442 (US+Canada: 462)
...1997: 1843 (US+Canada: 567)
...1998: 334 (US+Canada: 122)
...Total Production Run: 4619
. . . but these only very seldom come-up for sale, any more, seems
And it is the Last of the Air-cooled models --- aaaaaaaaaaaand a bit of a looker, too . . .

. . . 'cept for those nasty wheels
........
Perhaps "misery loves company". They can be a problem. More than a few have come along and I've dodged all of them.

I've had an NOS cable/track assembly for a 993 Targa for a LONG time.
These cars are ugly and rare... and have a bad rep but still, I've never seen the roof mech wear out on one.
Now playing on BaT . . .

$20k+ ^ for the above Mercedes van with 200k! I'm mad when my kids spill cheerios in my Dodge Caravan, couldn't imagine that happening in that van when it was new!!!
Clean Ford Festivas are going to be an investment grade car soon.
Air cooled and maybe suitable for the current times
