Back in the late 90s, I happened upon a Carelli 928 convertible. It had been given the then-popular "white out" treatment: with everything except the wiper blades and tires painted metallic pearl. It's not as if I could have waited to find another, since only a handful were ever made. So I ended up replacing all the seals and having the paint stripped.

Cannot locate the photo at the moment, but it was horrific looking. I was able to resurrect it, but it cost a lot of money.

On the yellow car, one hopes the trim wasn't (as Scheib used to call it) "scuffed" for paint adhesion.

    What a memory,

Had my high school VW painted by the Earl (Bellflower Cali)....it did only cost 29.95 and worth every penny. It took all summer to raise the 29.95 in them days. That's when I figured I should start painting my own cars...it was a question as to who did a better job of painting all the parts that shouldn't have been painted, me or the "Earl of Scheib"!!

    Those are good memories.
29 cent hamburgers at Burger Chef, gas for 21 cents a gal (reg not ethyl), and a "Scheib" for 30 bucks. Now it's "concours screwdrivers" for $350 and 2.7 RS's for 3/4M. Would be nice to return to the good ole days...

    NAH!!!!

Same here. My 73 Sports Bug being prepped for the Maaco paint shop (our version of Earl Sheib). They would paint anything that rolled in the door. No prep, just paint. I think I spent the extra $10 for the "Deluxe" paint job (which meant one of their painters who wasn't drunk would do the work). I pretty much stripped everything I could off of the car, sanded it down a bit and drove it to the paint shop with no lights, turn signals, door handles, mirror, etc! The paint actually turned out halfway decent

    * that's my mint, original '69 SS396 Chevelle under the cover that I had just sold to buy the VW.

Oooooh. That's gotta sting a little. On the upside, though, the Beetle was a sweet, European "sports" coupe...

As the old joke goes: "I don't believe I would have told that one, brother".

    Thumbs up

I convinced my buddy Hector to paint his '59 Giulietta spider metallic copper at Carcoa (Scheib competitor) for 49.95 in 1967...

Here's a pic later that year at Willow (I'm the one standing)
Looks like the right front fender already had primer on it... Oooops....

I later owned that car for over 6 years, by that time not much of the Carcoa copper was left .........
