    I recently had this same discussion about original parts. The body makers also swapped parts when building the cars new. Karmann made many parts for Rueuter etc and vice versa I would imagine. I think you'll find even then seperate dies were too expensive. Karmann also made many other car parts that they were under contract not to divulge. I have seen some old Karmann photos that had alot of parts that you wouldn't think that they made.

    You can see in the pic I posted that Robert had to do just a touch of work on the laterals (where you can see bare metal). On the gas tank support cross piece note that the one that is in the car is a recently revised piece from RD while the one sitting on top of the green bracing was a prior RD version that did not fit as well.
