Build Year vs Titled Year - Serial Numbers

Pardon the dumb question, I'm just trying to learn. If a 911 was built say in 1965, delivered late in 1965, but first titled as a 1966, is it considered a 1965 or a 1966 in the early 911 world? I realize this is probably starting to get into the questions of serial numbers. I have looked at the Red Book but I am guessing that isn't the whole story, knowing this crowd. Can anyone give me a good primer on the subject? Thanks in advance,
