my mistake. upon looking through my stuff I see you're right. the regular repa belts all used the zig zag. that said, all the original repa harnesses I've seen used the X-in-a-box.

on the bottom of the retractor there is a pin for locating in a vertical mount ( usually )on shelf mount retractors there's no pin, just a smooth bottom ( again, usually ). it's easy enough to tell which way the action works by tugging the strap in both positions.

probably horizontal orientation then. check action as mentioned earlier. shelf retractors are quite rare.

Michael, I've had a similar one, but with full black webbing. I pulled it apart and sold the retractors to Don for building a replica Autoflug racing belt.......
    http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...light=autoflug

At that time I thought these were 'home built' because the stitching was rough and the bucle used was the same as the regular 3 point fixed buckle.
You would expect a 'sliding' buckle with a inertial reel .........but they had not thought of that I guess. (baby steps...)

Don, Only later on, Autoflug started using the model you show. Those were used in the Beemers begining of the eighties. Between those two they briefly used the one that is the same model, but can be mounted on the parcel shelf, because it has no orientation. (They can be recognized by the MONO indication on the side and were used many years for the racing harnesses, and very briefly in the BMW 2002)

The 2 identical flat bottom retractors shown, only one has the MONO indication and works on the parcel shelf...

I would be interested in buying one of these for my passenger side if any of you would be willing to let one go.

    Thanks
