Looking at a '72 E today

Ok I just drove the E. Clean car, need things here and there. The father of the seller told me the 2.4 engine is from a '73, hence the CIS setup and the engine # is

6451598.

Can someone decipher that for me? I feel the same way about the originality of the car without the MFI. It is a nice driver is someone does not care about all original. Also, the car was originally a gold color according to the seller and was changed to this. The asking price is $15k. I checked all structural areas and the car appeared to be very solid.

Thanks. The pictures of the motor in this car appears to have CIS fitted. Is retrofitting CIS an easy undertaking? Is there any benefit?

In principle, the CIS system was preferred because of "drivability". A swap of MFI to CIS is not the most straightforward and, if I remember correctly, won't work well without some more internal changes (ie: cam, head - maybe compression?). So, most likely the whole motor was swapped - and therefore non-matching case number.

Hmmm... engine #6451598... this isn't a 2.4 motor.
You're looking at a 1975 2.7L S (USA Canada) engine. Not the correct case or fuel delivery system for the '72 chassis.

6451598= (6 cyl), (engine type 4= S), (engine year 5= 1975), (engine #). I believe this is how it goes.

No, I still have a '70 2800CS and '72 2002Tii.

I told the '72 E owner I was not interested because of the non original engine. Some have said it will obviously hurt value in the long run. What do you think the value of the car would be at this point? The body is very solid in my opinion and I think I know rust as I own a karmann built BMW as well as a BMW 2002 Tii. The current asking price is around $13k. Even with no engine this is a fair price, no? I see no bodywork that needs to be completed. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Pics would help to see what else might be missing but with a color change and non matching motor I'd say walking away might be the best choice. If the body is really 100% straight and rust free then 13K is in the ball park but you need to ask yourself if you like red or gold.
