    the end is near

Saw this at the Partsheaven Concours / Swap meet yesterday: A brand-new Panamera with a four piece set of shiny plastic roll-on luggage., referred to as the "Custom Fitted Luggage Set". Each small, very fragile looking plastic wheel had the word PORSCHE in the traditional script engraved in it. Price for the option.....$1,100.00. Puts one at a loss for words, doesn't it.

For years I thought that fitted luggage was sized and truly custom-fitted to maximize carrying capacity in the various odd- shaped compartments of GT automobiles, and hand-made to the highest standards, such as shown in an original 300 SL Gullwing below, for instance......Silly me.

But it is the buyers who part with their cash for shoddy goods. Nobody at Porsche is putting a gun to their heads and forcing them to buy the luggage.

Are the Panamera "fitted" bags really from Porsche Design? ..... Or just from somebody who paid Porsche a license fee to make the wheels?

Of course, and as always, you are completely spot-on with this observation, and it merely reinforces my admiration for the marketing skills of the Porsche firm. If there's money to be made, they no longer seem to care what produces income, as long as it produces some.

Re the second question, Yes, sadly it appears this is a PORSCHE Design product, I'm afraid. See the corporate name on the handles.

Another perfect example of the phrase "There is an A$$ for every seat."

If it couldn't be sold, they wouldn't build it. There is no accounting for taste.
