1971 Santa Barbara PCA Concours d'Elegance

These photographs were taken by my father Larry Smith at a 1971 Santa Barbara PCA Concours event with his compact trusty Rollie 35. I scanned them from slides dated '71 NOV. The 1969 911E was his (first car I drove at 15 yrs old) and not sure who owed the 904. These were the only two slides I have. Hope you enjoy them and if you have any others from that event, please post them up.

My Father owned the 1969 911E from new, purchased at Holbert's in PA and racked up 326,000+ miles before the little sister crashed it in 1981 or 82. It was an insurance write off and he tracked what salvage yard purchased it.

In 1988 when I was searching for my first 911 he FOUND it again for sale. We drove over to the east bay Emeryville, CA area (not sure who actually was selling it) and all I can remember was the same CA blue and yellow plate was on it (201 ESB) and also the T&D Porsche works, Campbell, CA frame too. Talk about memories - whew. Anyway, whoever built it back up did it quickly as evidence of the huge shunt in the rear was still there. The engine was totally covered in oil, so much so that you couldn't even see the green shroud. I was able to drive it, as I could have purchased it back at a good price. Knowing how hard it was hit and how poorly it drove, I knew in my heart that it wasn't meant to be again. Very sad day. However, this series of events bloomed into me finally finding a much better 1972 911T RS replica from Devin Wales up in San Rafael, CA.

I'm trying to find out if my father has the VIN on the old 911E and if it is still around. Long shot, but you never know.

    Great Pics

I like the look of the black 911 with the mini lites. With the number of early cars in So Cal we could probably replicate the event today.

    Thanks for sharing.

Great photos! Interesting that the PCA was letting in what looks like a Sports Purpose style of car back then. I would love to see more photos of that car.

    According to this site http://wsrp.ic.cz/chassis/chassis_porsche_906.html

    Vern's ex-904/6 is listed as chassis #906-12

    Engine: Type 901
    Year: 1965
Porsche KG => George Drolsom, USA (5.5.1966) => Robert Manschot, USA => Vern Convert, USA => David A. Evans, USA (9.7.1990) => Phillip Ma, HK (2001~2004)

904 chassis with 6 cylinder engine. Still at Drolsom (2000).

Thanks. Original method of duplicating wasn't the best. So, I'm rescanning the 35mm slides, will forward the high-res to the John for the "esses". I'll also rescan my 1973 Porsche parade photos too.

This is one of the oddities that pop up; what is obviously a 904 body but with a 906 chassis number indicating that the car was intended for use with the six cylinder engine. Perfectly legitimate, just an unusual combination. The Panorama writeup of the cross country tour with the car is quite interesting.
