    ST Wheels

I'm thinking of several choices of wheels for a ST project, having Harvey Weidman make a set of his 9x15 RSR frosted finish wheels or wide steel wheels like on the 906. What are your thoughts? Car will be signal orange. Any one have pics of wide steels wheels on 911s?

    wide steel

Remember the 906 wheels were alloy/steel wheels. Steel centers and alunimum rims so the weight of the wheels was reasonable. An all steel wide wheel could weight a lot?

Yea, I know they will weigh more, but not that much more. It has more to do with the "look".

here is a suggestion on the finish of wide steelies. Find a powder painter to paint the centers dark metallic silver and the rims "near chrome". That way the rims will have the appearance of having alu rims, even if they are heavy

we did the opposite on a 356 speedster replica (chrome center, silver metallic powder rims) and it lends a really neat appearance

What about the Technomagnesium wheels that were coming out? Someone had made a feeler thread for interest.

They look like steelies but are lightweight Magnesium. Not sure of the sizes, though...

I'm a huge fan of the widened steel wheels. In fact so much so, I am sending a set out to get widened for my 72. If weight isn't a concern to you, then go with the steelies. It will look excellent on the ST! Although some minilights on the rear and some fuchs in the front always looks great. Steelies would set your ST off a bit.

I posted the tecnomagnesio feeler - so far interest in wheels with ST type offsets etc, but certainly no where near enough to warrant approaching a manufacturer to make a small qty. Design and mould costs are well over 40K

Billet wheel I think is the way to go with your project. Heavier than if die cast or forged, but still lighter than if you used widened steelies.

I am currently speaking with a couple of companies concering digitisation, rengineer and then remake of steel wheels in either a forged billet alum/magnesium - potential then to offer a15 & 16 inch wheels in widths and offsets. Still discussing whether it would be possible to have a generic centre and then radially weld/rivet to a proprietry rim or whether it is a solid billet.

Each poses technical and cost issues. Either way still a way off

These are some nice looking wide steelies that a friend of mine had on his SC hotrod. He has since sold car but I could get details on wheel build for you.

    Paul,

the wheels on Andrew's car were 7x15 and 8X15 built to 911R spec. I also plan on going with 7x15 Steelies for my 73. I'll most likely have them Chromed
