Thank you for posting this photo, Thomas. One of my favorites on the thread. It has a strong quiet energy to it. The people, the running lights on, the big torches off. Full of anticipation
I'm thinking it's pre-stage with the daylight and condition of the car.
Can anyone place the location?
What's in the roof rack? Spare what? Wondering why it's even there, or were the entrant vehicles used to carry their own spares between stages?
One clarification on the car: I believe it to be from the '71 Monte Carlo, not '72. The Walter/Lier entry that DNF'ed that year... Do you agree?
One of my favorites, too... I stared at this image for a while just taking-in the way the car is setup; the mudflaps, the livery, the ride-height... and the onlookers, the light... a really cool moment in time.

Hugh,
Thanks for indulging me.
Your close up with the driver names on the door was helpful. Indeed it is no.41 for '72
A quick internet search found that the driver Florian Vetsch is alive and well with a Rallye Garage in Switzerland:
http://www.auto-rallye.ch/fr/auto-ra...an_vetsch.html
Florian Vetsch was the driver of the Ferrari Daytona that Jo Bonnier in his much faster Lola collided with at Le Mans later that same year. It was the accident that killed Bonnier, where Elford pulled over to the side of the track in his car to try to assist...

This top photo below is on his site and clearly shows 1972 on the rally plate.
One of the best looking and turned out cars on the thread IMO.

Start list from the Monte Carlo Rally in 1972, where you can see the starting number 106 Haldi-Keller Porsche 911S, you can see that it was a lot of 911 who participated in the rally.

I am in the process of digitising my images from the early 1970s to the early 1990s, including a number of Porsche pictures, and putting them on my website
www.lesashephotography.com
I see you copied some pictures from your programmes, including one of Dessie McCartnety in IIA 7700 taken by Esler Crawford. Have a look at http://www.lesashephotography.com/Ra...0733&k=sHcdvZV
for a similar picture - I was standing beside Esler.
I have got as far as the 1979 Circuit of Ireland but have lost the programme so I am struggling with the identity of some of the drivers. I see you have a copy of the programme and I was wondering if you could scan the entry list for me. In return I could send you a high resolution copy of one of the pictures on my site - you choose.
Many thanks
