No, no problem. Please look at my pics. You see several "data points" (clearly the wheel is on a flat surface and I am measuring up from the surface.) One can reference the stamped frame of the wheel in my pics easily. It is pretty clear that, more or less, we see 2 1/2" versus 3", a 1/2 difference from the two wheels (there are no absolutles as for this measurement as far as I know and all we need is a comparision). So, what is a 400mm wheel. (To use the plane of the hub and nut complicates the measuement as using a simple method that metic is not straight forward.) Thanks.

The 400mm wheels have some variation also....

I measured three leather covered 400mm wheels and have a few differences between them.
The 1969 wheel ends in serial number 081.20
Both of the 1971 wheels end in 081.10
The 1969 wheel is slightly deeper than both of the 1971 wheels. About a 1/8" deeper.
The 1969 wheel has a slightly thicker grip than the 1971's - 74 vs 70mm.

    The other photos (400mm)

Here are the depth differences for the 1969 and 1971 400mm wheels:

Bob, It looks like you are meausuring from the outer edge (toward the driver) of the spoke stamping piece. If so, compares well, more or less, with about 3 1/32" for the 420mm plastic (leather wrap probably increases this slightly) wheel and shows all BUT the 380mm at around ~3" + as opposed to the 380mm at ~2.5" Thanks.

    Campared to a 914 380mm

Here is one of the 914's 380mm as a comparison to the 400mm's above. The 380 is soft rubber with the imitation leather pattern and stitch. Dated from 10 1975.
Grip is a little larger at 78mm.

Measured to the same spot as those above, it's a 2 5/8" depth.

So, the difference between the 380mm and 400mm wheels is about 5/8" to 1/2" inch in depth - not 1" inch. Is it possible to buy an 1/2" adapter/spacer to bring the 380mm wheel back to the same position as the larger wheel?

Recently, someone else emailed me a similar question. Here was my answer:
"I got mine from Dave, Cornpanzer. Also, there was an enterprise that geared up to make extended hub wheels, there were some pics the board of stacks of extended hubs (spacers), maybe if you search you can find them and buy one.

Cornpanzer sold out on his I'm pretty sure but you can contact him.

For a SWB car with 380mm wheel, it is a GREAT idea. You need a complete wheel and need to take it apart and add the hub.

    Good luck."

And here is a link to a cornpanzer kit wheel I put together and sold to a list member and is on a VERY COOL 911 right now. Below is a pic of it.

Both Zuffenhaus and Classico offer 30mm extensions for their wheels, not sure if they are sold separately. There was a guy on eBay Germany that was also a nice looking machined extension.

Did this wheel, as described, come standard on a RS. Noticed the part number is 805.10 and date 8-70. However there are some differences as noted in Andy's post (#10) that seem consistent with it being a RS wheel. Little confused...
