Thread: Questions about 380mm steering wheels

  1. #11
Great information. But now I wonder what wheel I have- is it a 914 wheel
or the original wheel that came on my 73 911. I'm guessing 914 because of
the 380mm size but it is stamped '73....

    Bruce,

Andy mentioned above that the part # for your 914 wheel has a rubber covering made to look like leather. I have a wheel with the same part # as yours and it has a rubber cover also.

So then I guess it's probable that all 73S models came through with
400mm leather covered wheels as standard, true? Seems likely after
following this discussion. The RS wheel was pretty similar except with
    the smaller diameter...

Thanks Andy for increasing my cranium. I knew about the top side recess on the hub but, had never noticed the recess of the splines. Cool! My 380mm is dead on Brians RS wheel except it has an earlier date code but, definitly was a 914-6 wheel.

Brian, is the grip on your RS wheel thicker in diameter than the wheel in your S?

    Micheal,

I have never measured either wheel, but it sure feels like the rim of the RS wheel is larger in circumference than the S wheel. I will measure them tonight just for kicks unless someone already knows (which wouldn't surprise me )

FWIW, I have a 380mm 1970 914/6 wheel (pn 914.347.806.10) date coded 70 for sale. The leather is worn out but will make a good rebuilder. $100 would take it if anyone is interested.

I'm just finishing a replica wheel myself. It has a rubber 380mm rim, date stamped 1970. It came with the 914 shroud mounted to the back, so I know it was from a 914. It has the hub shown as an RS hub in Brian's post, not like the 914 example he shows us. The hub is identical to the original hub of my '70E, date stamped 11/69, including the countersunk threaded holes for the turn signal cancelation ring.

    914 #?

I have a steering wheel with a 914 347 805 10# with a 7/70 date. It is leather covered but the stitching/thread has split. Wasn't there a post that listed the #s somewhere or was it lost to the hacker?

I have two original 914-6's which both came from the factory with just the standard hard rubber steering wheel. I assume these wheels could be sent out to have 2 layers of leather installed for that RS feel and look too, am I correct? What is this soft rubber base mentioned earlier? The part numbers are: 914.347.803.10 dated 2/70 and the other is 914.347.805.10 dated 7/70.
