Thread: 65 911 paintwork

    Question 65 911 paintwork

I have noticed very extensive comments , in minute detail, on BAT criticising the lack of detail in many early 911 restorations. Most of these relate to paintwork, such as lack paint in various areas.
I am at the stage where painting of my 65 ( LHD USA car ) is to go ahead. Where or who is the definitive guide. I have Dr. Johnson’s book but not too much in there on this.
    Help !
    Peter

We would all love to see some pictures of such a rare car.

Photos of all original car the best.

Big mistakes that I often see include:

    - rear and front deck lid hinges should be flat/satin black, not body color, same with engine compartment
    - rear deck lid under grill should be painted flat black (although some say there are examples where this is not the case). I'm still waiting for photo showing actual paint line (can anyone provide?)
    - body color painted under side decos and for a certain width at bottom edge of rear quarter panel behind rear wheel should be painted over textured undercoating
    - area surrounding inside door panels should be (hand) painted flat black see pg 115 Johnson's new book, upper right photo shows correct application, the one below it is incorrect
-door hinges and mounting hardware painted body color, pins are not
    - not sure, but I think cavity behind horn grills should be flat black

    That's a start.....

Good start John. I'll try to post a photo of my original paint on the deck lid with black line.

Yes this thread is about a 67 but having been the owner of a 65, many of the details are the same.

Does some or all of this also apply to the '68 SWB model year?

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm a few months behind you, but will also be painting #302262 soon and have similar questions. Road Scholars currently has #302433 for sale. It's not perfect, but there are a lot of pretty decent photos you can refer to. Dr. Johnson's new book is great and the pictures are much better, but there are still a lot of questions I have which aren't addressed.

This is the original paint on my '65. Hope this helps, but I'm sure they are all a little different.
