    Hours to rebuild engine

    I’ll shortly be deciding who to send my 73 2.4S engine to for a full rebuild. I’ve disassembled the engine down to the main core by removing all the accessories ( MFI pump, stacks, fuel, generator, fan, cover etc). Then it needs to be further torn down, fully rebuilt and ready to install.

    Putting aside sub-outs for any machine work, how many hours should that be? Roughly? Assume all the old accessories have been restored and all the new parts are on hand.

    He was asking how many hours to put together an engine if all the parts are already sourced is what I assumed. Of course there's a lot of time involved in restoring and sourcing all of the parts. If you talk to an engine builder and all the parts are there and case work and all the other work has been done then 40-50 hours is what a few great engine builders have told me is how long it takes for assembly.

    50-60 hours is about average for our engine builder with 55 years experience and me assisting him with the builds. Assuming all the parts are clean and readily available for assembly. It easily takes 12-15 hours alone cleaning and inspecting the disassemble parts.

    I took my car in for a engine rebuild on January 16 2021 got completed August 8 2022. And thats with me doing most of the leg work.

    Hours to rebuild an engine and getting in queue and complete are two different worlds. You can get the hours from a shop manual. Real world 50 year old parts, sourcing, cleaning, machining, rebuilding carbs/MFI/pumps /distributor, plating, crank/rod balancing and refurb ,refurbing oil tank & lines, fan, paint engine tin, ceramic coating for exhaust & heat exchangers, ....etc
    I was quoted 4-5 months and went 1.5 years and a ridiculous amount of coin. You are in the hands of the builder, so chose wisely.

    once in the hands of the rebuilder; you do not want to rock the boat. It takes as long as it takes. I think the more important aspect of this is finding a long experienced engine builder so as to have a good result of the engine rebuild. There are always unexpected issues. For me it was the pressure plate of the clutch, engine oil cooler broken and main bearings that had to come from the right source.
