Presumably that’s where the charcoal filter is?

No, just a plastic box for venting the fuel tank.

A charcoal box is not something you will find in Euro cars. Where are you and what car do you have?

Fuel smell will probably come from a leak (tank, piping, clamp, pump). Can also be that the sealing of the level plotter is worn leading to escaping fuel, certainly when full/just filled.

That's no charcoal in the vapor box. It's just a "high exchange" of air from the tank to overboard lines that may end up going through a charcoal canister in the front left of the luggage compartment. This hose and routing is very model year and market dependent.

And to be honest I don't know if the the vapor box would be on an RS that was originally an RoW car.

Edit: As I think about it, it must be there but the charcoal canister in the front left may not.

Someone more expert on the 73 and the RS should chime in

Would also be my first suspect, that black plastic welded repair.

I suspect I need a new tank. Don’t suppose there would still be NOS in existence? I’d prefer not to get a copy as it’s a very original car with first paint.

NOS is quite impossible. Which year/month is now in the circle stamp? I have been looking a long time to find another 9/72 one.
