What’s this hole for 1973 RS

I was investigating a petrol smell and I found this hole. It looks like it should have some sort of cover on it. Any ideas? It’s just behind the smuggler box.

That's not your fuel smell. That hole was used for a gas heater hot air system, you don't have a gas heater, there is normally a thick paper cover over the hole, you can see the glue edge.

Thanks, I didn’t suspect it was anything to do with the petrol smell, I was just curious.

I suspect it might be coming from where the fuel filler pipe meets the tanks. It looks like it’s been previously repaired.

It's often the black plastic box on the driver side of the firewall. Easy fix. I think would probably replace those old fuel lines.

Wiggling out the fuel gauge can really help gaining access to this fuel fume accumulator box thing. Especially when you want to reinstall it after replacing the old brittle tubing.

Would also be my first suspect, that black plastic welded repair.

I suspect I need a new tank. Don’t suppose there would still be NOS in existence? I’d prefer not to get a copy as it’s a very original car with first paint.
