Some day you will deeply regret selling the wheel. Don't do it.

Thank you everyone for the valuable information and even more so, the kind words. I am eager to hear more! I'm swamped for a few days. I'll get more photos soon. Here's one for Mike, the stamp. (Sorry if it's upside down). Thanks again.20220615_140208.jpg

Appears to be an early aluminum rimmed wheel and RARE. They later went to steel rimmed. Be very careful with emailed offers. Do some homework first. I don't know what current value might be because I don't swim in the early waters much but, I'd guess $4000 and up...?? Regular early steel wheels are in the $2500 range IIRC.

Also, I agree... If you get a '68 and if kept completely stock, I'd rock that wheel..

Good luck and beware of sharks.

Has anyone figured out the numbers on the early wheels?

My Vin# 301875 '65 was in an accident. when I check what all that wrapping on the steering wheel was about, I found it was holding the original bentwood together. The wrapping was more like a cast than a grip enhancement. I ended up laminating the original frame, serial # 2259 with Cocobola, to match the Cocobola I replaced my old blistered original with. That was 22 years ago. I am now planning to market my car and these days, originality is a big deal. I was able to refinish the "picture" of Mahogany original quite successfully but of course, the steering wheel is a problem. What do you want for it? I've owned my car since '76. Ken Reeder

    more photos, much better ones

Hi guys, Here are more, and much better, photos. I'm happy to post as many as you guys would like. I am still sorting through the advice regarding price. Not quite there yet. One other thing for now. Several of you have encouraged me to keep the wheel in the case I do get the ’68. To me the wheel does not represent my father or my memories of driving the car. To me the wheel represents that my dad gave the car to one of my siblings that did not turn out to be a good steward of the car. I have been disappointed for many years I did not get the car. I think it best to bring back good memories with the ’68, hopefully, and not the wheel. Thank you again for the both public and private suggestions.

    Hi guys,

I want to thank the many of you that, both publicly and privately, gave me valuable advice and thoughtful comments. I won’t go over all I learned at this time but thank you. What I did learn is the value of this early VDM steering wheel is around $4500, maybe a little less or a little more but that is the ballpark. If any of you are interested in the wheel, around that number, let me know. Otherwise I’ll advertise the wheel more broadly. Thank you again.
