Authenticity Gurus: Did my car come with front bumper guards?

    Hi Guys:

Quick question for the authenticity gurus here.

I have a euro 71T with the S Trim package. The car was imported into the US in the 80s, so I’m unsure what was/was not added. Trying to unwind that and bring her back to original form.

Would my car have come from the factory with front/rear bumper guards / bumperettes?

    Thanks in advance!

The M470 Appearance group option usually includes the Rubber capped bumperettes in 1979 and 1971.
I can assist with obtaining a CoA type of report to detail what options were factory installed if it is required.

All cars came with rear guards. Front guards were always standard for North America, but I believe they were optional in the RoW. So as a RoW car it could have come with or without. You probably will need Dave's help to track that down.

Thanks, gentlemen. I was fortunate enough to get a COA before they changed the program/process . . . again.

Pulled the COA out this evening and confirmed the "Comfort Package" was optioned on my 08/1970, Karmann-built T. With Phoenix tires, no less. Hah.

Does this give us a clue on the front guards?

Probably not, as I suspect one could specify the Appearance Group even if the car did not have front bumper guards.

The key question (one to which I don't know the answer) is whether the front bumper guards were standard on RoW cars or not. If they were standard, there would need to be a "front bumper guard delete" item on the order list. Or if standard was w/o guards, then a car with guards should have an option showing such.

Front bumpers delete was a no cost option for all markets, at least 1970/71, option M421.
RoW had them standard too, but rubber optional, except S or Comfort/Appereance package.

sorry for the pics, somehow forgot how to upload them correctly..wishing it would have an edit buttom in the era of IG.

So there is the answer. Regardless of market, front bumper guards were standard, but one could order the car without. But if so, the CoA should have specified that.

What an excellent post (and answer). Thank you to everyone who chimed in here. Looks like my RoW car had them fro the factory . . . and will keep them!
