The problem with the roll down in second is it already gets 2 to 3 time the wear as up and down shifts are always thru 2nd. I counsel my transmission customers to give up that practice.

My '69 does the same thing unless I shift into 1st slowly and gently.

I have two cars with 915 boxes, neither has this problem. But then I don't slam them into first either. The test is when shifting into reverse it should go in without grinding after a split second pause. If so it is not a clutch problem. Lets face it, synchros wear out! Either replace them or accept a one second pause.

I am happy to hear there is the potential for no grind! Thanks

Bingo! Did the reverse test. Then tightened the cable, wayy better! thanks

Yes. Rowing down thru the gears seem to help. Then right before starting away go from N to 2 to 1. Have same year car and only happens when I forget to do my sequence.
