thats very odd...all but one early cars i`v had a closer look at had this tube...but it was different compared to later cars....it reaches way shorter into the passenger compartment...and it was made from 3 pieces...a short one in the trunk and a long one that goes inside +it was connected with a short metal sleve(hard-soldered)

the one exception was a car t i did not see as a good reference car since it had a massive front fender bender ....it had a bowden cable

    Hood Pull

Here is a photo from car 149. Looking up from the floor you can see the the Hood Pull in relation to the gas lid release ring lever.

The Hood Pull is further forward than in 1965 and all later cars. It was about 50mm longer reach to find it.

Look closely to the inner fender for remaining spot welds and the opening (hole) in the side of the hood latch support, is there any evidence of the tube
    being there at one time?

    Guide tube for cable control

Thanks to you Franz and Bob.
I'll be watching this very closely when I'm with the car.
In the meantime here is a photo taken just after stripping.
Do you see anything interesting? (Please, ignore the screw in the red circle)

an other thing you maybe want to know is that the shape of the cutout in the door stop area is different on early cars...the reason is that the tap where the door stop is connected to the A-pillar has a slightly different shape ,so if you are useing a newer door it is very likely they would collide when closing the door...

    Thank you very much Franz!!!
It would be great if you could find pictures that show the path of the tube in the front trunk under the dashboard.

since there is no tube installed in your car i would first look if there is any indication /traces if there ever was one installed....would be quite odd if someone removed the tube and even more odd if he did also perfectly remove every evidence.
