    Deciphering the Kardex 1965 911

Just received a Kardex from the source-fast service at a fair price-thank you.
A year of high school german tells me ...

    chassis 301349
    motor 901437
    gearbox 101405
    FL 887??
    cc-83??
Produced or delivered (?) June 6, 1965 for 1965 model year
Dolphin Grey with blue vinyl interior
165-15 phoenix brand tires and 15 inch wheels
    Webasto gas heater option
Dealer-P.C. Pacific in Burlingame California-are they or their successor still in business??
First Owner-Frank O'Neal of Carmel, Ca
Is the lower area a list of parts and their cost??

There's an article over at the 356 Registry, Kardex Translations: German/English ny Dr. Brett Johnson.

    • ausgel. am : Delivery date
    • Zündschloß-Nr.: Ignition switch number/shift lock here also. I believe FL series keys were for the locking steering columns while K series keys were for steering columns that didn't lock.
    • Schlüssel-Nr.: Key number (door on early cars)/glovebox key here also

It says your car reached 100,000 km in 1967 but "G.uhr Plakette: date a wrist watch and a 100.000 km badge are sent to the owner in recognition of driving 100.000 km in a Porsche" is blank. Maybe you should take it to a Porsche Design Store and see if they'll give you a watch.

Dr Johnson's article also states: Later Kardexes have a couple of different fields and no longer had carpet, headliner and dashboard: Abnahme-Besch: on these Kardexes means the date that the customer/dealer received it, while ausgel.am: completion date (Kar.angel.am is not on these Kardexes)

However, I can tell you that chassis number 301382 was delivered before your ausgel. am date:

It is interesting to see that your car was delivered in the USA! Any number of people have told me that there were no 911s delivered in the USA in 1965 because of the extreme difficulty of meeting federal regulations.

Of course, in 1965, there were no federal regulations. All the states demanded sealed beam headlights and I'm pretty sure Porsche had the parts on hand for that.

The bottom part is for warranty operations. I don't think it lists parts. Based upon my high school German (but mostly Google Translate):

    Wartungsdienste maintenance services
    Gewöhrleistungs Anfräge Warranty request
    Kulanz-Anfräge fair dealing request
    Km Stand Mileage
    Instandsetzung Datum repair date
    Händler Dealer
    Gegebener Betrag shared amount
    angewiesen am rely on
    Natural-Ersatz L. S. Nr. Natural replacement L. S. No.

The Webasto heater wasn't really an option--it was standard (or at least no extra cost) on 911s but Porsche always recorded the Webasto's serial number.

Here's my 911's Kardex listing the Webasto heater if that helps.

The first two are key codes.
The date is the invoice date to the distributor. Remember, this is a Warranty document, not a production document per se. I sometimes see true completion dates and am able to compare to the invoice dates; the latter are sometimes weeks later.

The earliest car delivered to the USA in my records is 300232; completed 1964 12 22; invoiced (ausgel. am on Kardex) 1965 01 19; warranty commenced or customer delivery (abnahme besch) 1965 11 16; probably was a demonstrator before being sold.
I have several more with USA or Canada deliveries below 301500 and 22 out of 70 with deliveries in calendar year 1965.

Thanks! It's always seemed preposterous to me that Porsche would have withheld its premier car from its biggest market, but I've had no hard evidence.

My own car is a bit of a mystery. I know it was picked up in Wiesbaden in June of 1965 and by September had been serviced at Vasek Polak in Manhattan Beach, CA.

I've never been certain of whether my car was a factory European delivery or a "grey" market to such extent the market was "grey" in 1965:
    • Charles Blandford was not the name of the gentleman who owned the car for its early decades--In fact, he sounds like a Hitchcock character.
    • I have a locking steering column which--apparently--not all USA '65s did, and
    • I don't have a 4-way emergency flasher which Porsche at least intended for USA cars.
    • I have English gauges date stamped April 1965
    • The original Hella 128s were in bad shape but don't appear to have yellow reflectors.
