Thread: Fuel Level Sending Unit Related Question

Fuel Level Sending Unit Related Question

What is the orientation of the metal piece that sits on top of the fuel level sending unit. Does the VDO stamping point in the direction of the battery (driver’s side)? Or does it point in the opposite direction (passenger side) so the date stamp is visible on the battery side? Or it doesn’t make any difference?

Will it only go on one way? Does the screw layout differ a bit so it only goes in one position?

  3. #3
Date code should be at 12:00 as viewed from the front of the car.

  4. #4
Does the screw layout dictate the position, just curious.

The screws do not dictate the position, but if one desires that the sending unit plug/loom to be logically oriented, it has an ideal position.

This plate has been removed from its sending unit—see the three smaller holes? These fit onto locating dowels that were molded into the plastic portion of the sending unit, which were staked/flattened to prevent this metal ring from separating from the sending unit. Presumably, this ring has been removed from the sending unit to be reconditioned by cutting off the staked flattened “heads” of those dowels. It can only be refitted one way, as determined by the dowels (assuming they are still present) on the plastic portion of the sending unit, and while the sending unit could be fastened to the tank in a few orientations, only one will result in ideal plug/wiring loom orientation when these towels are engaged.

To be “correct”, the wiring loom/plug will be optimally routed when the ring is oriented as described above. Naturally, this assumes that all of these sender rings have their stampings oriented alike relative to the locating dowel holes.

Hello prs356. It's apparent that some people that responded don't know the the screw layout is NOT SYMMETRICAL and I would like them to measure the screw layout and respond back. My date stamp is in a different position than a faces towards more towards the top right. does it occur odd that all the dates stamps are not in the same spot? Thanks I just love this porsche crap!
    Waiting patiently.

The holes are indeed indexed. I’m working on my fuel sender/system now so it is an easy one to figure out.

Yes , the screws determine the position , I'd like to see you randomly install this !
