Thread: Reference: 380MM steering wheels - THE TRUTH

  1. #161
Were the 806.10 wheels just standard wrap? Or thick? I see people thick-gripping the lookalike 805.10 wheels but I'm unsure of how the original RS wheels were wrapped.

I believe the original RS wheel (806.10) was just leather wrapped and not padded.

    Thanks.
Cruisingnkali is correct; it should be 3 5/8”. I have a 380mm wheel rewrapped by Dallas Steering Wheel and it measure exactly 3 3/4” and it’s unused. Over time and with exposure to the elements, it should shrink to 3 5/8”.

    RS Steering Wheel

    Steering us right guys,

We believe the answers above are only half correct. An RS Steering wheel has NO extra padding like an original RSR wheel. The photos below are of an original RSR wheel we own. The grip is about 3 5/8. You can see the padding on the plastic wheel itself and the thin lining on the leather grip of the original wheel. Don redid our wheel keeping and repairing the original padding on the plastic rim of the wheel. An RS wheel does not have this padding. I do not recall the circumference of an original RS wheel but it is about 3 inches. It will feel "thin" compared to today's steering wheels in cars. Searching this forum will give us a confirmed number for a standard 911 leather wrapped wheel, which is the same as a standard RS wheel. From the link below where "andyjboy" wrote: Just measured the circumference of the leather grip on both an 806.10 & an 805.11 - both have their original leather covering & both measure 7.6 cm" (3 inches)

John, You are correct. The 806.10 is the same thickness as the 805.10 wheel (and 400m standard leather wrapped wheel) and are about 3 inches (thin). They are the SAME wheel except for the part number. Neither an
805.10 or 806.10 are thick grip wheels. See answer above for more info. Thanks.

I had my 805.10 wheel re-wrapped by Tony at Autobahn and the circumference measures 3.5"

Curious, if these are thick wrapped with padding, do you still feel the 'finger grip' along the back? I can still feel this and I like it -- feels a bit vintage to me.

Will an 804.10 bolt directly up to a 911 if the plastic junk is removed?

Awesome thanks! Wasn’t sure because someone talked about needing a 30mm spacer with his 804.10 on page 9 of this thread. I wonder if he didn’t remove the plastic
