Great, thanks Soterik and Allen. I suppose then as long as you've got the correct size and font DFS wrenches in your toolkit, it's good to go.

Too bad I didn't collect toolkits or hood emblems back in the 80s; a large stash of those these days could pay the mortgage.

    Drop Forged Large Font Tool

    Tool geeks,

Here is a 12/14 DFG'd, large font. This is from a 1964-1965 356C/SC kit. We know this because 12/14 is unique to these kits. Starting for the 911 kits, which gained 13mm nuts (which a 356C/SC did not have) there were five wrenches including a 12/13 and a 14/15. The 356C/SC kits only had four wrenches and this is one of them. Note the light machining at the ends.

Also I just checked one small font 14/15 DFG'd, and I can confirm what Eric wrote: the ends don't appear to have been machined. I'm guessing by this later point in time, casting/drop forging improved, so that maching was not required. For me, the ends of these look very smooth/excellent. And, of course, no post machining means lower manufacturing cost. Thanks.

Here is my very original 1969 911 travel kit as a comparison. PORSCHE towel believed to be original.

    Very early SWB kit

Here is pretty good confirmation of the early 901/911 toolkit. This is from 300835 which would have finished production in late April 1965. Note the 356-like tabs on the two-tone bag. And good shot of the SWB spark wrench with (looks like?) the large, 12mm hex drive. This would seemd to confirm that the 12mm was standard on early kits. Later the 10mm which, I believe, also fit the oil drain plug. And note the Kleins of course. Large FONT drop forged wrenches and pliers with satin (not shinny chrome) raised cutting edge. Thanks.

PS This kit got me thinking and I reviewed my photo database of well over 1,000 SWB Porsches: looks like the two-tone tabbed bag was standard equipment up to around chassis 301100 or around May 1965 production. I'm now trying to get confirmation that early 912 kits used the same bag. In any case looks like 1,000+ bags like these were produced.

The towels with the blue lines, at least originally, were 356A era. The towel was kind of oatmeal colored and definitely not white or ivory.

And image woud be very helpful as a search for images with a blue line/oatmeal turned up no images. Thanks.

my travel kits have all gone on to new homes & I haven't been able to find any of those pix.
this is from Eric Cherneff's 356 too kit site. it Is my understanding that all 356 era kits got the
towel w/ the blue strips bordering the red field.

SELECTED STEEL wrenches / data point

I had 2 others of similar manufacture (10 x 11 & 12 x 13). they went to the original owner of a '69 to replace wrenches that had gone missing.

Late Model Year 1966 Tool kit

Highly original tool kit from 304572, ~May 1966 production. Note bag color among other items including Messko in gray vinyl pouch and, mostly hidden, spark plug wrench. Large font Drop Forged Wrenches and tip of the Allen wrench for the spark plug wrench, 10mm? or is it the larger 12mm which we believe is from much earlier kits.

    '73 tool roll

Can the experts chime in if the screwdriver and bits is correct for '73 or '73.5 911? Thank you in advance.
