Is there any list/sheet saying what size wheels went on what car? For example, when did Porsche switch from 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 steelies? Were the wider wheels an option, or just the new standard. I am looking for that kind of information.

There are numerous books , one of my favorites is "The Red Book" by Paternie. The author died years ago, don't know if they are still in print. Another is "911 Performance Handbook" by Bruce Anderson, unfortunately he is also no longer with us, but again these are two of the best books.
I like the 911 & 912 Restorers Guide to Authenticity by ESR member Brett Johnson (ISBN 9780929758305). It is current, detailed and most of the errors in the "red book" are corrected.
Simple answer to your question is 1968 model year. This was the new standard. I believe the Fuchs forged alloy wheels 6R and 7R may have come out in 1968, but these were racing purpose and thus rare and expensive; not something that was generally available.
Thank you Dave and Ed!! I will purchase these books.
I have a set of 4 original factory 1971 dated 6"x15" steelies in orig paint. I think these were a one-year wheel.....mine are dated 11&12/71......not going to be using these.
