380MM steering wheels - THE TRUTH

There is much confusion, deception, out and out lies, myths and misinformation about 380MM steering wheels.
I will attempt to solve some of them.
First of all, not all 380mm wheels are alike and most of them are not appropriate for a 911 or 912 but they will fit, sort of.
The only true "380mm Carrera RS" wheels come from 70 and 71 914s. 914/4s and 914/6s use the same wheel in 70 and 71. 70 and 71 914/4s have a bunch of plastic on the back of the wheel to adapt it to the 914/4 steering column and turn signal switch. 914/6s use the same parts as a 911 on the back of the wheel.

The first picture is the back side of a 72 or later 914/4 steering wheel.
The next picture is the back side of a 70/71 914 steering wheel with the plastic junk removed.
The next picture is of a 72 or later 914 steering wheel with the plastic removed.

Do you notice any differences?
They are significant!
The splines are the same and both will fit on a 911 steering shaft. The later 914 wheel could possibly suffer if the wheel nut gets over tightened, though. Not a problem with the early 914 wheel.

Part 2

Now, lets examine the back side of the hub where the horn canceler goes. Notice that the surface is perfectly flat around the edge of the late 914 wheel and is raised on the 70/71 wheel. Now look what happens when you attach the horn canceler. Yes, it sticks out on the late wheel and fits perfectly on the early wheel. Also, when attaching the horn canceler to the late wheel, one must drill new holes and then countersink them. They are already there on the early wheel.

You seem to have answered some of my questions in a couple of posts. I have read many threads regarding this topic and some of them just don't go anywhere. These pics and your explanation are concise and to the point. Thanks!

The front side of 914 steering wheels. If it has a countersunk area around the splines, it is a late wheel and came from a 72 or later 914/4 no matter what the seller says! You can not hide the counter sunk area in a picture. The "good 914/4 wheels are flat on the front.

The first version of the counter sunk wheels has sharp edges and does have a lip around where the turn signal canceler goes, much like the early 914 wheels and all 911 wheels.
The later versions have beveled edges and are flat on the back.

Part numbers on 914 wheels

914 347 805 10................... Leather covered, rubber rimmed steering wheel 70/71 914/4 and 914/6 and (apparently) 73 Carrera RSs. (The best choice for 911s) These are the ones
that are flat on the front.
914 347 803 10................... Plastic rimmed 70/71 914/4 steering wheel (You can cover these in leather and they work just fine. Double wrap them and they are even better)
914 347 805 11....................Leather covered 72 914/4 steering wheel (with 90 degree counter sink) Not the best choice but they do work better than the later 914/4 wheels with the
beveled counter sink.
914 347 804 11....................Plastic rimmed late 914/4 wheel
914 347 809 00....................74 and later 914/4 "simulated leather" wheels. These things are junk!

Bottom line.........................If it is flat on the front it is best and if it is beveled it will work but not great

I was hoping you would know... Bought it from Don at Porsport a few years back.

803.10 is the core for an ST/RSR/914-6GT "Thick Grip" wheel (often called double-wrap)

Here are some pics of my original RSR wheel (Thanks to Ron at Aase Sales)

Notice that it was a hard plastic wheel, covered in black felt and then a thin cover of cotton before the leather was applied.

Dumb question, but is it possible to drill the rivets and remove the hub from a later wheel to install an earlier hub that will bolt on to an early 911 without modification? I ask because I've purchased a nice leather wrapped 380mm wheel but it turned out to be a later version. I listed it for sale here in case somebody else might be able to use it as is but I'd really like to keep it and install it in my car. I wanted it to fit correctly however and I'm thinking a hub swap would be the only way it might. Does anybody know if this project is possible?

While on these wheels, any idea where to find a 911 extended hub? It appears they are pretty hard to find unless somebody here has a stash of them laying around. I don't think anybody produces an after market one that looks factory.

First, yes it is possible to replace the hub.
Second, our own Cornpanzer has previously produced a reproduction of the extended hub. An old thread can be found here:

I think you would be better off selling your wheel and looking for a proper 380MM wheel to restore. Just my opinion and you know what those are worth.
Extended hub wheel? Do you mean one like this? Those are very rare and I don't have a clue where you would find one.

I looked at the Zuffenhaus wheels and they're pretty nice. I've also seen Cornpanzer's hub extension but unfortunately they are NLA at this point. My real problem is I paid a fair amount for the wheel I've got thinking it was what I needed and I'm pretty sure I won't get my money back out of it. Because of this I thought I'd try and use it if possible. Ill probably just buy the Zuffenhaus wheel and do what I can to sell the one I've got. Its listed here in the for sale section but does anybody know what it's actually worth so I can sell it? Sorry to hijack the thread but thanks for the help,

The recent surplus of 914 steering wheels appearing in the classifieds that have been "modified" and are a "direct bolt-on" has added to the confusion.

Stretch, just a FYI, Zuffenhaus has an extended hub option in case you did not know.

Interesting leather Stefan.
I've never seen an original leather covering with that grain. Usually (in my limited experience), they are much more fine grain/smooth.
Has anyone else seen a verified original wheel with the course grain shown above?

It's not the original leather.

It was redone prior to my purchasing it 3+ years ago. I was told at the time it was done by Tony at Autobahn...

I, also have to make an admission that I assumed the number for a hard plastic 70/71 914/4 steering wheel would be 914 347 804 10. I made that assumption because it is the one wheel that I don't have in my stash. The actual number is 914 347 803 10. I am going to amend my post about stamped numbers. Sorry for any confusion. It is the only assumption (not substantiated by having the part in my hand) that I have made. I should know better!

When I was stationed in Germany, around 2005-6 I looked and found a 380mm leather steering wheel for my 1970 911T. I had it recovered from a retire German that used to do it for a living in some factory years back. I stored it, moved back to Maryland and finally installed it in 2011. You have a very nice 70/71 914/6 380mm steering wheel. It has a hard rubber grip that was always meant to be covered in leather. Your wheel could have come from a 70/71 914/4, as well. Who cares, though. It is the same wheel and is the wheel used in 73 Carrera RSs.

Jim, Great info. I didn't have all the steering wheel detail knowledge that I needed. However, PET is confusing me. In the Euro section they list only one part # for the 73 911 RS. 911 347 084 00.Leather covered 380 mm wheel. Your thoughts?

More PET confusion. Part # 914 347 805 11 is listed as a wheel for a 72 and up 914/6. (I didn't know they made the 6 in 1972) Underneath, they list the same part # for a 72 and up 914/4 with leather.

This wheel I called a RSR wheel, it has a very soft thick grip and the covering was very smooth and glossy. Gled

One of the keys to determine whether a wheel has a hub that is compatable with a 911 column is the last 2 digits of the stamped number on the hub. If it ends with 11 is is 914/4, if it ends with 10 it uses a 911 hub no matter what it came from.

PS: Never knew a 916 used a 914/4 column, very interesting.

Don't know about 916 but 72 914/6 did use VW column. Can someone confirm the number of 6's built in 72, I don't think it was very many. I will try to find info later. Gled

This is something that I don't believe for a second. Porsche deliberately used only the 2.0 6 cylinder 911T motors on the 914/6 between 70/71 in order for the 914/6 not to be directly competitive with the 70-71 911T models fitted with the 2,2 motors at the time. If the 914/6 were built in 1972, it would only have been fitted with a 2,2T motor, not a 2,4.

Thanks for your additions. I am sure both of you are correct. My info came from examples that I had in my inventory. I have every reason to believe that the "806.10" version is a correct wheel for a RS. I doubt that there is much difference, if any, between the 805 and 806 versions, though.

Some of that thread's discussion centered around the full cross-stitching (as opposed to typical factory "baseball" stitching) where the leather met the spokes. But an interesting last comment from an RS owner who has two RSR wheels said both his steering wheels were indeed cross-stitched throughout - no baseball stitching. Who knows? Regardless, a very interesting thick grip wheel in a larger diameter.

Looks like a 914-4 steering wheel, 70-71, hard-rubber. Makes sense with a Nov. 69 build date to be for a 1970 MY car.

Can confirm that is what is on my long term-owned first series RS too. Not messed with or retrimmed in ~25 years I've had it. Pointer to provenance and it being original to car is it still has the rare lighter weight plastic horn push that was only ever fitted to the earliest of first RS series only used until 6th February 1973 when superseded by series-production part when the unique to RS model part used for homologation weight saving purposes proved fragile!

I'm using actual genuine RS and its still attached original wheel with the original RS plastic hornpush for reference for this correction.

The second edition Carrera RS book refers to 914.347.806.16, suffix .16 being typo for .10 not caught in proof-reading presumably. There are a few bloopers in the "tome" but this particular one is unlikely to confuse.

I'm not in market or particularly interested in a steering wheel of number being discussed. I'm only chipping in to thread because I feel that when unattached orphan wheels show up like this for discussion on this board it is important that general facts get correctly represented about the steering wheels with provenance / known to be fitted to and still firmly attached to the genuine original RS cars currently or previously owned by folks on this forum -- especially as thread is ambitiously entitled "THE TRUTH"

I have the original window sticker from my 912e... It states as a factory option a 380mm sport steering wheel... It's also listed on the COA...

Did it have the same type wheel as 73 model year or was it like the impact bumper RoW Carrera style which I presume might have had a 380 wheel.

You keep referring to later dates I am talking about a '69-'70 dated wheel with a thick grip (3 5/8") bought from the racing department with part number 914.347.803.10 Forget parts manuals for '71, '72, '73 that is not the same wheel, I know the one pictured above sold for $7,500 and then again for $10,000 so now you tell me were the buyers idiots, it went on an original 914-6GT. I don't care about your RS book we are NOT TALKING ABOUT AN RS OR RSR WHEEL CAPICHE?

The RS and RSR cars themselves were obviously later than 70 being MY 73 but some genuine RS were actually equipped with wheels date stamped 70. An important fact particularly on a thread of this name.

It is of no consequence to me whether the wheel # you are investigating is rare / valuable or common/ low value tbh.

It does matter that to me (and presumably other RS owners) that things said about RS wheel, even as an aside, on this broad "380mm steering wheels - the truth" thread are not allowed to remain unclear or maybe even be misleading. Hence my second point of clarification on RS wheels being dated 70 in some examples, as some other owners / experts might confirm for the benefit of the wider thread.

If you ask for help here and it is given plus the things shared are factually correct and apparently clarify several muddled points, why get hot under the collar.

I was discussing with Hugh in PM that I expect to view somone's original ST. Could have enquiried about its steering wheel, but why bother.

Sounds like your question of RS fittment was a "red herring"

The RS and RSR cars themselves were obviously later than 70 being MY 73 but some genuine RS were actually equipped with wheels date stamped 70. An important fact particularly on a thread of this name.

It is of no consequence to me whether the wheel # you are investigating is rare / valuable or common/ low value tbh.

It does matter that to me (and presumably other RS owners) that things said about RS wheel, even as an aside, on this broad "380mm steering wheels - the truth" thread are not allowed to remain unclear or maybe even be misleading. Hence my second point of clarification on RS wheels being dated 70 in some examples, as some other owners / experts might confirm for the benefit of the wider thread.

If you ask for help here and it is given plus the things shared are factually correct and apparently clarify several muddled points, why get hot under the collar.

I was discussing with Hugh in PM that I expect to view somone's original ST. Could have enquiried about its steering wheel, but why bother.

Sounds like your question of RS fittment was a "red herring"

Why would the factory take an 806.10 that is already wrapped in leather and tear it off for the thicker grip when they have the 803.10 sitting there already stripped. My guess is later '72-'73 they ran out of the supply of 803.10 and starting using 806.10 & 805.10

If you had already read the thread (something you expect others to do) and already knew of these earlier posts in this thread where cornpanzer had answered your question in post # 12 and 13-- even showing an example -- why were you asking the same question again just a few days ago? Mike, perhaps I am reading your post incorrectly, but one clarification. The 1973 RS did not use a thick-grip wheel. It was a standard size leather grip 380mm. The 914/6GT, 911ST and 911 RSR had the thick grip. Forgive me if I missed your point.

For the record:
My car has a x/70 date stamped steering wheel (with number the same as Clyde previously confirmed that he also had on his two early RS)
As you say it had a standard / thinner wrap, original leather in good nicely patinated condition and original stitching.
Provenance confirmed beyond reasonable doubt by presence still of the rare fragile plastic horn push that was known to only be found only on earliest RS built up to Feb 73, when it was superseded by the normal metal equivalent.
Certainly never replaced or otherwise changed wheel in my 25years of ownership
Believed original having spoken to the few previous owners -- pointing out the novel presence of the rare survivor plastic horn-push has sometimes turned conversation that way.

I'll bow out of this discussion because I have no interest the thick wrap version but just wanted to make sure any convoluted and at times possibly confused discussion on this thread, does not cloud the issue on what genuine original RS thin rim steering wheel fitment was -- at least the original 380mm wheel evidently fitted in my particular car's case.

If a table is built by somone then hopefully what Clyde and I have already shared, which seems very consistent for early first-series RS cars built not too far apart, might be a useful data point as a starter.

None of the wheels discussed in this thread including the one in your picture are compatible with your 912E. You have a completely different column that required a very different steering wheel.

Does anyone know what I have here? Part # is 914.347.088.10 dated 9/69. It was leather covered but is gone now just has the hard foam left that is over the plastic. Also has the factory drilled countersunk holes on the back for the 911 cancel ring.

Probably very early 914 when it was still sold/badged as a VW/Porsche and marked with VW sign instead of Porsche traingle but already with a Porsche part number. Just guessing..
