After a 3 month wait, I get to play :)
These are Nurburgring seats recovered in perforated leather and Blackwatch tartan. Just got them back today and I'm really pleased with the result!
Nice John. Will your butt fit??
Great look John!
Since GT seats were an option for 65', I thought I would be different and install Speedster Seats (as close as I could come to GT seats). Not only are they comfortable, they remind me of the 356 I sold to buy the 911. New carpeting in the car and on the seatbacks is next on the list.
Wow Christian, I really like those Speedster seats. Do you have a source for them?
Those DO look great! I like the idea of Speedster seats for later cars, too. Jens, I got the ones for my 356 from Russ at Fibersteel...
beautifully made steel reinforced fiberglass, your choice of upholstery. http://fibersteel.com/
I bought mine from a friend of mine but was told they originally came from Stoddard. I will update the picture after the carpeting is installed for the full effect.
Thanks Russ, and thanks Christian.
Christian,
here is how my 911R seat came out. It's a TRE seat and the upholstery is by Tony Garcia. The light gray carpet is period square weave (although the 1964 911 floors came with Haargarn Charcoal (salt and pepper plush) the trunk had Charcoal square weave). The hint from a "out of focus" period photo indicated the seat had light carpet covering. Herbert Linge had many rallys in a GT seat and this looks like a close cousin to it, low back and no headrest. Happy accident was the edge binding Tony used it's a perfect match to the grey roll bar color.
Custom seat rail mounts with stock lever allows the seat full range of fore-aft seat adjustment. 1/4" spacers allow for bolt-in height and rake adjustment.
The houndstooth matches the passenger seat.
The passengers seat is saved original vinyl with replaced houndstooth, with all six pleats. The head rest is original, cleaned vinyl and rechromed arms.
The attachment was upgraded to machine screws into floating threaded plates, replacing the sheet metal screws into thin metal brackets. The mounting screws are lathed Stainless to get the counter sunk, oval heads, then polished to look like the original chrome screws.
The R like the GT seat is a skinny butt seat. After 5K mile trips it is still very comfortable.
The Herbert Linge custom steering wheel always photos as off white, in reality it is a beige leather. Double wrapped with the added thumb pads. Once you have driven with it - it's now my favorite wheel. The pro knew what he liked and specified his steering wheels from the 550 up thru the 917 cars that he drove. He got it right on this style wheel.

Me too. :) Would it be tacky to have a shirt made of the same material?
Russ, I think it would be in the spirit of things. ;)
is anyone here running the cobra RS seats? They are 429$ a seat, and 150$ for the brackets/sliders. I've got a quote lined up with vintageseats and I love the feedback I see from you guys, and from talking to the guy he seems very very swell.....but at XX00$ more in total, I'm just feeling the gap mentally. any thoughts from anyone here?

Ya really got to sit in the seat to know if you'll like it for the long haul. Michael's seats are among the best quality out there.
Here are mine ready to go for trim. I'm having them done as close as I can afford to the perforated edges and cord middle of the originals. eI know the headrests aren't quite "correct" but they'll be fine. The shell's have holes for 5 points if I ever fit them. I'm also fitting a pump up lumbar support rescued from an office chair. I have lower back problems so this may help with comfort a little.

[QUOTE=Digital K, I've decided to go with vintageseats. [/QUOTE]
You will love these seats. I drove an SC from NJ to WV and back, with a weekend of romping in the mountains with Michaels' RS seats, and they so very comfortable for the long haul and for hustling throught he twisties, and the quality is outstanding.
Mounted today... Touring passenger seat, and lollipop driver's seat.. Shitty phone pic.

That's a good looking pair Dutchman. You must know someone in the profession with a nice camera to lend so you can take more photos! ;) More photos please.
Thanks Jens! I'll take some more good photos when I take the car out on the road again when the salt is gone..... Shouldn't be too long, spring's kicking in.
Craig, I remember you talking about these seats. Make sure which one to get. This is the narrow version, fits my tiny ass perfectly, haha!! Since you are so tall, you might want to check the other version GTS has.
You're right Maurice. You mentioned how small the OEM lollipop is our trip to Willow Springs, so before plopping down the money I went out to Rennwerks and sat in the OEM size. YIKES! Oiling up like a body builder couldn’t get me to the bottom of that seat. The European factory racers in the 70's were certainly not 6' 1" and 200 lbs.
I also sat in GTS's "Enhanced for Americans" Endurance model (polite euphemism). Its too big for me...and two seats will not fit in a 911 at the same time. I decided to go with the D-Zug carbon fiber models. They are the same OEM outer shell dimension, but they mold the inner shell with 1.5cm extra space. The shells are being upholstered now. I should have them in about three weeks.
My lollipop is still in Australia right now. Hopefully it makes it to Phillip Island and then into a container with some cars headed back to The States. Maybe it'll get here by the end of this season.
my seats from vintageseats should be here soon. I'm incredibly excited to put them in.
Hey Craig, keep me posted on the progress... Looks very interesting!
They look great Maurice. Can't wait to bring our porsche's together and go for a spin. Had mine out a couple of times already in the sunny weather.
Hey Maurice...THANKS for the very cool story in Total 911! Well done!
John
Does anyone know anything about these sport seats? they are german made Konig's and came to north america installed in a 911 in around 1982 but wondering if anybody can give an approx vintage to them?

Got my seats from vintageseats the other day. There were only a few viable options out and about when I realized I wanted to replace the seats I had. I'm really glad I decided to spend a bit more and get these seats. They are fantastic. Not to mention it's great how good the entire experience was. With the internet, and access to a huge depth of customers most businesses have really blown it on the customer service side of business. Not Michael. Really pleased with everything, especially the seats. I'll get some real photos of them in the car when I get them in!

The previous owner of my new (to me) 911 had these seats installed. They are definitely more comfortable than the originals, which came with the purchase.
What are they? What should they normally be fitted to?
I wonder if those headrests are original to those seats? Those headrests came in suzuki swifts that had a recaro in a trophy style. I think they came on others but thats where the mesh headrest typically belongs.

Hi, these are early Recaro Idealsitz N around ca. 74.

Does someone have a picture of a 72/73 interior '42', ie dark brown with these madras check seat inserts?
I will refurbish the interior to original specs, but have never seen a similar interior yet.
Gentleman,
This thread is getting a bit far to field…. It was once ‘steered’ way back at post #401, I think it’s time again…
Let’s get this thread back to showing our fellow contributors our seats shall we…….
If you have question about your seats please put them over in the ‘Technical’ forum…….
Cheers and thanks
Adore I think the madras you show is closer to 74 my. I have an original brown madras set. 32 on the kardex. They look very different.
seats are finally in, and I think my interior is done(ish). comfort and quality wise they are great. I think I'll need to make up something to lower them a little bit though. I'll take some better pics once its outside, the lighting in the garage is atrocious.

Yeah, it's a wonderful look and I'm betting the quality is top notch. I'm a little jealous.
The madras I showed exactly matches the madras check 42 on the 1972 farbkarte/colour flyer: Attachment 246180
My CoA states innenausstattung 42 Madraskaro and colour outside 8310 grün metallic (next to it on the same flyer). I assume the initial buyer must have found this particular area of the flyer most appealing.
Adore, guess I was wrong on that one. My car is also Italian, Varese, and has cinnamon leatherette/32 on coa etc. Documented as orig by first owner etc. It is an Oct 72 built car. I have never seen the ROW fabrik card for 32. Do you have a photo? There is a photo of my madras in Johnson's book in a 73 911. It was never available in the US.
Having talked about this seat with Eric last friday I found it today in Auto Motor und Sport 7/1968 in the 1968 Monte Carlo Works Car - seems I had a bit of luck...
Attachment 248065
Recaro
It was said that mine came out of a 1970 911S. They are super comfortable. By the looks of it, it seems be from between 1973-1976.
Attachment 248078
It took a bit of work on the brackets, requiring drilling and some grinding. They work pretty good, except the passenger side takes some pushing to scoot up and down.. I just think I need to squirt in some lubricant on the sliders.
Not that I am international man, but the RECARO stitching is in a light fushia. You can see it kind of well in the photograph. I wasn't sure if I would take a fresh red sharpie (that I just purchased for $2.00, and closely matches the red of my car) and carefully with steady hand, color the "pink" threads to red. However, just when I think of doing of using the sharpie, and its been a whole week, I chicken out. I would be open to any suggestions. Anyways..these Recaro seats are a whole lot better than the 83 944 seats I had there before. Those older seats were broken, wouldn't slide around at all and painful on any drives... no bolster support at all.
Those look like the new(er) version of the LS.
Do they have a made in Germany sticker or the LS label on the side hinge cover?
I saw a "Made in Germany" sticker... Ill look again on the side hinge cover.

Please help! I'm about to have my seats redone in green leather and the green/black/white houndstooth cloth. Love it, love it, no problem there. What I can't figure out is whether to have the back seats done with the cloth inserts or just plain color. Anyone know if this (rear houndstooth inserts) was ever done from the factory? I seem to remember seeing that sometime over the last forty years of looking at these cars but now I can't find a photo. Anybody have a photo?
Gordon
Hi Gordon, welcome to the group, the rear seats in Houndtooth is in one of the pre production car photos. It is pictured in Brian Longs book Porsche 911, the Definitive History 1963-1971. Page 39 and page 40 for the rear seats configuration.
I don't believe it was a standard issue item (but knowing Porsche and the special wishes anything can be done). One of the Early 911S Reg members has a Martini
colored car with the rear seats and it's stand up collar and the squab 6 panels in hounds tooth - very distinctive.
Here in my original Recaro R seat that just came back from Tony at Autobahn. Was hoping to use the original corduroy seat insert for "Patina" but Tony said it was too delicate and fragile due to it's age. Going into my '72 for some seat time as the Recaro Sport seats are heading back to Tony for refurbishing with houndstooth inserts.
My '73 Recaro ST seat... now I have to find another one!
Attachment 252160

Attachment 252827Attachment 252828
well.... that would be a backseat I wouldn't want to be in.
I have been running a set of a Vintage Seats R seats in my ex912 and my current '71 911. I love these seats but have been thinking of something with more support for the driver seat. I love the look of VS's ST seat but was not sure my big ass would fit. No problem. VS built me an ST seat with a little less stuffing to give me just enough room - they feel great!
Also, one of the reasons I originally bought the R seats over the RS seats was I liked the look of the grommets that run up the back of the shell. To help my new ST seat match, VS even had the grommets added. I could not be happier and amazed at how easy Michael at VS is to work with and how he does what he can to meet you needs. Obligatory pics....
Very cool…..looking forward to receiving mine!
The Lollipops are in and the Pasha is out....

They are TREMotorsport products, built for me by David Bouzaglou. A special order which doesn't belong to the catalogue: perfect RSR copies with Prelon cover for my lovely Trudi. The same he did for Sam Gassel's Sunoco RSR.

Those sir are spectacular. When I first entered this corner of the car world, I wondered what is the deal with that elephant hide material for 68? Now I think it is a fantastic period interior material for a unique one year only 911. Would love to own a car with EH interior. Maybe my early 69 would qualify? Sadly I think not. Beautiful seats...
Hi Guys, many had asked us for a "Singer"style seat.We couldn't go with all the electrics so we went with the Recaro Rallye II and reproduce that model. We will show it at the LA Lit Show and at the PhoenixClub swap meet.See you there.Attachment 324106Attachment 324107Attachment 324108
Hi Guys, thank you for the notes. Yes the seats can be made with heated elements and integrated switches.Yes all colors, patterns, combinations and materials are available...and yes the backing can be colored, infact the next set has just amber fiberglass look to them.
My new acquisitions...
Take a set of these and with a bit of work they kind of turned out OK. You could stop half way and have a set of Singer style seats or add a top circle and get Lollipops......
Detent system for head rest posts running in acetal tubes. Headrests will be properly shaped prior to leathering (I borrowed them from a Honda).

"Maxem - it looks very much like you have cut up a set of relatively rare 968 Clubsport seats…..or at least something very similar"
No.... These are relatively cheap generic fibreglass shells of no brand in particular. Purchased new from a performance parts shop.
That's a good looking seat there GTS. I would have preferred the posts on the inside but the seat back angle and headrest type pushed the headrest a bit too far forward. I also would have preferred seat shells that had plain backs but a combination of fit, cost and width to locate down between the sill and tunnel of a 911 made these the only real choice. Those contours made it a real pain to finish - would have been much easier on the inside like yours. This is One of those jobs I wouldn't do again. Way too much time involved.
Hi Maxem, I know exactly how you feel...the work is ridiculous, but in the end the effort is worth the out come.As far as contours,it's better to have them in as it gives the seat more strength and less flex.We made the mistake that we sold the first ones without the side brackets and the seat is way to straight up and the customers had to shim them a lot. Most headrest these days push your head so much forward,we have customers sending in headrest of new cars to be revised.

Looking to replicate the worn faded corduroy inserts as seen in Uli's seats below. Can anyone help? I have some new black corduroy material which I am trying to age over the summer by leaving it out in the sun for the next several months, also going to have a go at using a few chemicals to try and fast track the process. however from my initial experiments not holding out much hope.
Was hoping someone might have some original material available which is already faded etc enough to cover a set of seats (inserts)
Long shot i know but if you don't ask...
thanks
Mark
Is it possible to leave it in a tanning bed for a couple weeks? That way you get intense simulated sun 24 hours/day.
Hi Bob, thank you for sharing, couldn't find anything either ( as they were the leading brand for making seat covers ) and haven't see that seat before.Seems like they closed in the 70 and the trademark was active until 1997
thanks Stefan. I think i'll use it in my 71T
Scheel (now called: lightweight) sliders were often used on race cars because they allowed adjustment of the seat - even if you were strapped in a Harness.
I've seen Recaro buckets with Scheel sliders in period photos, but today I've seen something very cool: a Scheel Bucket with a modded Recaro Slider.
This is a right Recaro slider mounted on the left side of a BMW Works car with a bent lever to allow for adjustment of the scheel seat.

front is done with herbal tanned leather from austria, stripes are embossed in italy to get the correct "flechtnarbe" look and feel.
backs are done in leatherette . . .carpets according to the original material . . .
Very nice, Haul! Great looking leather!
I sold my standard seats these days because I was able to get a set of 68 sports seats. Should have thought more about the leather though: yours is lovely! I went with modern Porsche leather which is good good quality but very matte!
close up from the "flechtnarbe" embossed stripes......
anatol, how matte is matte from the good good porsch leather?
the sport seats definitely suit your beauty no matter how matte they might be...
I was really looking for the herbal tanning treatment, as this was the "old method".
we can see 50 year old porsch leather, if treated nice, it is really nice....
So, my sons, please post it again in 50 years, to compare it to today....the 912 will then be 100

I finally managed to install my new sports seats:
Attachment 343269
Attachment 343270
After several years of hunting I found a set of 68 sports seats and had them restored, retaining the foam and the pepita cloth but rebuilding them entirely. New Porsche leather was used.
After the first 50km I have to say they make for a completely different driving experience! Up until now I had used Recaro R buckets which gave you an excellent feeling for the car. In the sports seats you have considerably less lateral support. You jump up and down over every bump in the road, even though I use four point harnesses. They give you a much more vintage feeling for the car which is charming. But my buckets are certainly better for getting the best out of the car!
We will see where this leads. Maybe sports seats just for shows? ;)
It is amazing how similar my aftermarket seats are to your seats.

A question for the experts.
Sports seats with Red, Black and White houndstooth (peptia) inserts: which way should the red stripe go? Vertically up the seat, or across?
No thoughts on this? It is a question that seems to have many views but it would be nice to see some original sports seats with 3 colour houndstooth.
Merv,
I just check my samples guide and it seems that all the 'complementary' colors in the hounds-tooth options are presented side to side...
Hope this helps
It does somewhat thanks Chuck. Opinion is divided on whether the red should be vertical or horizontal, but I suspect there is no standard.
cheers

agree with Chuck - checked pictures I have taken over the years and it appears the black base is always vertical and the contrast color lays on top and is horizontal
Thanks for that.
Custom made Recaros
Wow! Terrific. What model are these? Never seen them in combination with these headrests.
I'm thinking ENDO has superb taste in interiors, this is his second that is just outstanding. Well done.
ASS Parade (hmpf)
Satanic detail on the right bucket - the lever for the slider is shorter. (as on Recaro RS / RSR lwt vs. Standard)
Will bring them to Strähle Swap

In Road & Track's On Porsche '72 to '75, page 52, shows a then new '73S with the colored band going vertically. Sport seats with what looks like black/white/beige or brown pepita.
I first thought I finally found a pair of Recaro 13.29.00 for my collection - but once unpacked I thought they are repops as they had the shell painted black.
I was educated that they were pretty often in white gelcoat - Recaro Tradition will probably get them as they are interested.

This set of seats are now in my '72. I had to buy a whole car to get them, but I got the '66, swapped out the seats for a set of stock seats that were correct and sent it on its way. Recovered at a local shop after buying the houndstooth material in Germany. Definately worth all the fuss, I love these seats. Attachment 357154Attachment 357155
These are extensively modified modern race buckets, the build up was posted some time back in this thread. The leather is custom embossed to my own pattern.

They really look the business Serge
My old seats were completely devoid of any back support and after I saved my pennies, thought it would be fun to add houndstooth (pepita) inserts to my completely re-done seats.
