My 1968 Engine rebuild thread

Thought I'd share progress of my complete engine rebuild. I've completed quite a few mechanical projects in the past but nothing as extensive as this. the biggest piece of advice to share is find yourself an amazing Porsche machinist and have all your work done in one place. Easier said that done but I got lucky having someone local that knows every detail of these things.

This is a bunch of photos from last year. Machining on all the parts has been done ad they're all waiting for me in my basement. Crank was magnafluxed and ground down .25, cylinders bored to 81. Using Wossner pistons (proper dome compared to JE) and amazing looking pieces. Rods have been redone. Heads redone. I am actively rebuilding one carb at a time. I'll post more pics in the future in this thread.

This is also a public service announcement to all future prior owners to please not user silicone on your engine. Just let it leak. The reason for the rebuild was, at some point prior to my ownership, a seized cam on the left, secondary to what I can only guess was debris in the oil tube in the cam tower. Cam seized, cam timing gear pin sheared and two rockers broke into pieces. When I removed the cam cover, someone had undone the cam nuts in an attempt to see what had happened. Shockigly, and a testament to porsche engineering, the car would just start right up ad was totally driveable, albeit not all that powerful seeing as it was running on 3 cylinders and still had to move the mass of the other cylinders, lol.
